Talmud: Tosafot and Steinsaltz - 07 07 10
So as I delve deeper into the Talmud, it becomes like a rose, layer upon layer of explanation, discussion, rationalisation and argument between the Rabbis. A single letter or prefix can result in hours and hours of discussion in our Talmud group - the lecturer (Rabbi Levy) is so knowledgeable and able to bring out so many (I wont say all ;) points. Even understanding the layout of the page of Talmud is complex - comparing the handwritten, Vilna and Steinsaltz editions is incredible, looking at how they build on the Mishnah which was written 400 years previously. The tradition is so rich. Hearing the numerous perspectives on the piece we are examining at the moment is thrilling - and what we think that might mean in todays context. What an opportunity.... which B'ezrat HaShem will come again tomorrow morning, along with Tanach in the afternoon. The days here just seem to get better and better ....
